Mergers and acquisitions fall in the energy market
Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) operations in the Spanish energy sector fell by 30% in 2025, according to the ‘Spanish Energy Deal Pulse FY2025’ report by Alvarez & Marsal (A&M). The consultancy attributes this decline to uncertainty over electricity prices, pressure on profitability and increasing network limitations. The fall is more pronounced than in Europe as a whole, where the decline was 15%.
A&M considers that the Spanish energy market has entered a new stage in which producing electricity is cheaper thanks to renewables, but managing and integrating it into the system is more complex and expensive. For this reason, investors are now more selective and prioritize assets with more predictable income, less exposure to price volatility and greater security of execution.
Renewable energies continued to lead corporate operations, representing 85% of the total in Spain. However, the weight of solar energy decreased, going from concentrating around 70% of operations in 2024 to 52% in 2025. At the same time, other renewable technologies gained prominence and increased their participation to 15% of the total.
The report also highlights the growing interest in energy storage, driven by the fall in prices captured by solar energy, which fell below 30 euros per megawatt hour (MWh). In addition, it warns that the congestion of electrical networks is raising the costs of the system: adjustment services reached 3.8 billion euros in 2025, 43% more than the previous year, and already represent close to 19% of the final price of electricity.
