Spain joins forces with Ireland for an electrical interconnection

Spain and Ireland have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore a possible electrical interconnection between both countries, with the aim of strengthening energy cooperation and contributing to the development of the European electricity market.

The agreement, signed by Vice President Sara Aagesen and Irish Minister Darragh O’Brien, establishes an initial three-year collaboration framework, extendable, to promote a strategic project that favors decarbonization, energy security and the integration of renewable energies.

As a first step, both countries will encourage their electric transport operators to analyze the potential of interconnection, evaluating key aspects such as costs and technical challenges, the results of which will be collected in a joint report.

If the project is considered viable, Spain and Ireland could present a proposal to include it in European energy network planning. If its viability is confirmed, they would move towards the development of a more detailed project.
