The president of the CEOE rejects a tax on energy companies
The president of the CEOE, Antonio Garamendi, rejected this Tuesday the possibility of implementing an extraordinary tax on energy companies in Spain to face the effects of the war in Iran, considering that it would be a “dangerous” and imprudent measure in the current economic context. During his speech at the ‘Wake Up!, Spain’ forum, the business leader defended the need to act with “calm” in times of uncertainty and avoid decisions that could affect the stability of the productive fabric.
Garamendi has framed his rejection in the recent evolution of public accounts, highlighting that Spain registered an increase in debt of 80 billion euros in 2025 despite having record tax collection. In his opinion, this scenario shows management problems rather than income. In this sense, he has criticized the lack of deflation of personal income tax, which according to his calculations, has meant an additional 19,000 million for the State derived from the impact of inflation on taxpayers.
