The house renovations They can hide certain surprises, especially when done in old houses. There are many new owners who discover small treasures during the renovation, or as in the case of this house in Vienna, it was one of the workers, specifically a plumber, who by chance found a hidden treasure, consisting of 30 kilos of gold coins valued at about 2.3 million euros.
The discovery occurred in the Penzing district during renovation works. According to the local media Heutea worker saw a rope sticking out of the basement floor, but thought nothing of it. The next day, the plumber who came to the house noticed that same detail and, motivated by curiosity, decided to pull it. Unable to move it, he began to dig until a metal box appeared embedded in the ground.
When he opened it, he found dozens of coins inside. gold perfectly preserved. “I have been working in construction since I was 15. Sometimes old coins appear, but something like this is unique,” explained one of the workers present at the time of the discovery.
You will have to share the money with the owner of the land
Although it was the plumber who discovered the treasure, he will not be able to keep the money from the discovery, and as clarified by the media, Austrian legislation establishes that this type of treasure must be shared with the owner of the land. According to the Austrian General Civil Code, when valuables are found hidden for so long that their original owner cannot be determined, the find must be divided equally.
“The search engine and the owner of the land each receive half,” the regulations state. This implies that the plumber will only be able to keep part of the treasure, while the rest will correspond to the owner of the home.
The discovery also generated some frustration among other construction workers. Especially to that worker who saw the rope initially but did not act, “if I had pulled it at that moment, now I would be the one receiving that reward,” he lamented.
