Why does the price of electricity increase?
International tension continues to leave its mark on energy markets. The conflict in the Middle East and the uncertainty over strategic routes such as the Strait of Hormuz maintain pressure on oil and gas, although this effect does not always translate directly to the Spanish electricity market. Here, at least for now, the weight of renewables continues to help contain a good part of that impact.
That is what has been seen in recent months. While the external context continues to be marked by instability, the wholesale market in Spain has moved at much more moderate levels. January closed with an average price of 71.43 euros/MWh, but in February it fell to 13.53 euros/MWh. Furthermore, during March renewable generation once again played a very prominent role within the national electricity system.
In these first days of April, this trend of relatively low prices has continued, although with some specific increases. This is what happens this Tuesday, April 7, 2026, when the average price of electricity stands at 33.47 euros/MWh. The rise is noticeable when compared to recent especially cheap days, but the market is still very far from the highest values recorded at the beginning of the year.
This scenario is still relevant for consumers with regulated tariffs, although not in the same way as before. The PVPC continues to be linked to the daily market, but since 2024 it also incorporates futures references to smooth out oscillations. In 2026, this component has a greater weight in the calculation, so the rises and falls of the pool continue to influence, although its immediate effect on the bill is now somewhat smaller.
