Wolves agree club-record fee for midfielder who turned down West Ham

Wolves have agreed a club record deal of £38million plus add-ons for Sporting midfielder Matheus Nunes.

West Ham failed with a bid for Portuguese international Nunes earlier this transfer window but now the Portugal international star has chosen to move to Bruno Lage’s side.

The Hammers looked nailed on to secure the signing but, despite their advances, Nunes turned down a switch to the London Stadium

When asked about the pursuit of Nunes West Ham boss David Moyes replied: ”We made a bid for him but he chose not to come.”

Nunes now looks set for a move to Wolves where he will be in familiar company alongside compatriots Joao Moutinho, Ruben Neves and Daniel Podence.

Known for interceptions and good technique on the ball, Nunes would provide tenacity to a Wolves side that has already added Valencia’s Portugal star Goncalo Guedes this summer.

Nunes has clocked up 101 appearances for Sporting, adding eight goals and nine assists since joining the Lisbon-based club from Estoril in 2019.

He was a key component in Sporting’s title triumph in 2021 and his impressive form earned him a call up to Fernando Santos’ Portugal squad last October.

The 23-year-old has since gone on to make eight appearances for his country and opened his account for the Selecao in their World Cup qualification play-off win against Turkey in March.

Wolves will be hoping the impending addition will kick start their campaign after a disappointing first two games.

Lage’s side were beaten at 2-1 Leeds on the opening day and followed it up with a disappointing 0-0 draw at home to Fulham on Saturday.

Wolves face a tough trip to Tottenham this weekend searching for their first three points of the season and will be confident of an upset having won on three of their last four trips to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
