Werner completes RB Leipzig return as striker posts heartfelt message to Chelsea fans

RB Leipzig have completed a deal to re-sign Timo Werner from Chelsea, the club have confirmed.

The forward has signed a four-year contract with the club and moves for a reported fee of £25million including add-ons.

The move comes just two years after the German international left Leipzig for a fee of £47.5million.

Despite arriving with a glowing reputation, the 24-year-old has struggled to thrive at Stamford Bridge.

In two seasons in west London, Werner scored just 23 goals in 89 appearances for the club without really making an impact in the Premier League.

With the World Cup coming up in Qatar this winter, a return to Leipzig sees the German forward given a chance to get his career back on track – something that he is clearly excited about.

Speaking to the RB Leipzig website, he said: “I’m very happy to be playing for RB Leipzig again from now on.

“It was a great time from 2016 to 2020 in which we caused a sensation as a league newcomer.

“It was a worthy farewell for me back then, going as a record goalscorer.

“But that’s also a bit of the past and now I’m looking ahead, because RB Leipzig has developed over the past two years, just like I have.

“I had two great years at Chelsea for which I am very grateful and which ended with the Champions League title.

“The experience of playing in another country and another league helped me a lot on my way.

“Now I’m looking forward to the new season with RB Leipzig and, above all, to the Leipzig fans, who are very important to me. We have big plans together and of course I want to be the first Leipzig bull to break the 100-goal mark.”

Werner confirmed his Chelsea exit on social media, saying: “Today marks the end of my journey with @chelseafc. I am incredibly grateful for the time I spent at this special club.

“At this point I would like to express my appreciation for my teammates, the coaches & staff, and especially for you, the special supporters of Chelsea Football Club.

“I felt so much love and support throughout the last two years and I will never forget how you guys stood behind me in good and in challenging times! We lifted trophies like the Champions League together and I will always remember the song you wrote and chanted for me.
