Werner close to exit as Chelsea take financial hit two years after £47m transfer

Timo Werner has edged closer to a return to RB Leipzig, with reports Chelsea have agreed a cut-price deal with the German outfit.

The Blues are ready to take a financial hit to offload the wantaway German, who is set to leave Stamford Bridge for a little more than half the price the London club paid for him just years ago.

Werner is set to leave Chelsea after two years

Werner hasn’t had the desired impact at Stamford Bridge since his arrival in 2020 for £47.5million.

Across two seasons, he managed 23 goals in 89 appearances, and was clearly out of favour after just one.

And multiple sources claim the 26-year-old is now set to return to Leipzig – where he scored 95 goals in 159 games – for a fee of around £25million.

He could even undergo his medical back in Germany as soon as Tuesday.

The Blues signed Romelu Lukaku last summer as they sought a more prolific forward, but that move failed too with the Belgian now back on loan at Inter Milan.

Raheem Sterling is Chelsea’s big attacking signing so far this year, another clue Werner is unwanted by compatriot and manager Thomas Tuchel.

It is claimed Werner and Tuchel have fallen out over his playing time and the role he plays in the manager’s system.

And the forward himself made it clear he was at least thinking of leaving when spoke in pre-season.

Werner made just two appearances during Chelsea’s pre-season campaign, and was left out of the squad for their 1-0 victory over Everton on Premier League opening weekend.

“First of all, the most important thing is that I am happy. I am happy when I play and score goals,” Werner stated.

“That’s the fact. That’s what I should take care of and the other things will come. I could be happy everywhere.

“I think of course the manager always has different ideas, different thoughts and what you need in different games, I think in many games I was not in his thoughts so I try to change that.

“It is clear I want to play more and I should play more to first be in good shape for the World Cup and also, to have a chance to play at the World Cup.

“I think it doesn’t change anything whether it is a winter world cup or in the summer. I think if I play half or the season or the whole season, I should play.”

And now his exit is set to be confirmed imminently.

Meanwhile, Tuchel has revealed Marcos Alonso is set to leave the club, after the Spanish defender was also left out of the squad with a transfer to Barcelona on the horizon.

The manager said after their win over Everton: “He [Alonso] tries to leave and we agreed to this wish.

“That’s why it would not have made sense to put him on the pitch today. He would’ve been on the pitch otherwise but in this situation, it was the right thing to do.”

Callum Hudson-Odoi is also likely to quit Chelsea with Southampton and Leicester City credited with interest.
