‘Welcome to the club!’ – Brighton troll Man United as pundits react to woeful loss

When Manchester United lose 4-0, the football world is always going to be talking about it – but you know it’s bad when you get trolled by Brighton.

Erik ten Hag’s side fell to the shocking result against Brentford on Saturday evening with David De Gea’s error-strewn first half seeing the Red Devils go 4-0 down inside 35 minutes.

While De Gea was to blame for the first goal in particular, mistakes from Cristiano Ronaldo and Christian Eriksen were also partin United’s collapse.

Thomas Frank’s side undoubtedly deserve credit for such a victory, but it’s Man United’s performance that has got everybody talking.

As well as individual errors, Ten Hag’s team rarely looked capable of handling the physical threat that came from the Bees, with 5ft 9in Lisandro Martinez tasked with marking Ivan Toney during the first-half.

Gary Neville predicted on Sky Sports that Brentford would look to use long throws into the penalty area to cause panic against United’s small defenders, and later sounded – for once – lost for words as the Red Devils were ‘bullied’ by the London side.

Distance covered was also a huge area where Ten Hag’s side fell short, running just 95.6km as a team compared to Brentford’s 109.4km.
