It began with Scott McTominay showing he wasn’t going to take a step back against a notoriously no-nonsense team.

As half-time approached, the players clashed when the Man United midfielder accidentally elbowed goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

It provoked an angry reaction from Diego Simeone’s players, but it was quickly calmed down as McTominay protested his innocence.

He was later seen explaining to Oblak’s teammates his side of the story, with the referee calling him over and booking both him and the keeper, who reacted to the challenge.

The teams went in at the break goalless though among the other bookings were Fred, Thomas Lemar and Reinildo.

The breakthrough came four minutes from the end when Joao Felix settled things with the only goal of the game.

United are also in action on Sunday, at Old Trafford, when a second string side that is likely to include Cristiano Ronaldo take on Rayo Vallecano.

Elsewhere, there was a good reception for Christian Eriksen as he warmed up, while another new signing, Lisandro Martinez, was also on the bench.

Eriksen came on and made an instant impact with a beautiful ball into the box.

It has also been reported that former Porto and South Africa striker Benni McCarthy will join manager Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff.
