Tavares scores stunner and gets high rating from notoriously stingy French press

Nuno Tavares marked his Marseille debut with a brilliant goal to help the French side to victory in their Ligue 1 opener against Stade Reims.

The left back, who is contracted to Arsenal, left north London on a season-long loan deal this summer in order to play more regular first team football.

While his time at Marseille is only just getting started, he’s already endeared himself as a fans’ favourite.

With Marseille leading 1-0, the 22-year-old picked up the ball down the left flank, before cutting inside on the corner of the penalty area.

Tavares then let fly with a left-footed effort that fizzed low and hard through the defence and past Patrick Pentz in the Reims net.

However it wasn’t just his goal that impressed, with French newspaper L’Equipe giving his performance an 8 out of 10 rating, a big achievement for the notoriously hard-to-please outlet.

Scoring long-range stunners isn’t something Arsenal fans saw from the young full-back last term, but given this cracking effort, some will be wondering if they made a mistake in letting him go.

There was another familiar face for Arsenal fans on the score sheet, as Folarin Balogun grabbed a late consolation for Stade Reims.

After emerging as a second half substitute, Balogun found the net with a typical poacher’s effort as he headed from from inside the box following a cross from the right flank.

Unlike Tavares, Balogun is renowned in north London for his ability to find the back of the net, but at 21 years of age, the focus for the young striker is on playing regular first team football and crucially, finding the back of the net.

The attacker endured a mixed loan spell with Middlesbrough last term in which he scored just three times in 21 appearances, so the hope will be that a season in Ligue 1 will see him return to the Premier League giants a much more complete player.
