England star Alessia Russo has revealed the full extent of the Lionesses’ celebrations after their Euro 2022 triumph – and admits she is still recovering.

The Manchester United forward, 23, played a starring role for Sarina Wiegman’s side as they became the nation’s first-ever European champions.

Russo became a popular figure nationwide during the tournament

Shining as an impact substitute, Russo scored four goals across the tournament, including a stunning back-heel in the 4-0 semi-final victory over Sweden.

Fellow substitutes Ella Toone and Chloe Kelly were the heroes at a sold-out Wembley on Sunday as the Lionesses beat Germany 2-1 in the final after extra-time.

The Lionesses partied long into the night and paraded the trophy in front of thousands at Trafalgar Square on Monday.

And joining talkSPORT in the studio on Thursday morning, Russo admits there are still a few sore heads.

She said: “The Sunday night we all went back to the hotel just outside of London. All our friends and family came back.

“We were on the dancefloor all night, everybody got up on the mic.

“Then we had to wake up and go to the parade. I think there were a few sore heads.

“The next day we had a little team meal and a night out. I’m still recovering!”

Many hope the Lionesses’ triumph will provide a watershed moment for women’s football and inspire progress.

England’s stars have written an open letter to Conservative leadership candidates Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak urging real change in female participation in sport at grassroots level.

Personally, Russo’s life has already been transformed by the Euro 2022 triumph.

She added: “We can’t just walk down to Zara and Tesco like we could before.

“It has been different but it’s exciting for women’s football.

And after establishing herself as a national treasure, it is only right her boots are currently sitting next to the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London.

She said: “I think they’re on loan. I went to the Tower of London on Tuesday and handed them over to the beefeaters.

“Now they’re sitting next to the Crown Jewels!”
