Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo has been accused of ‘setting a horrendous example’ by leaving Old Trafford at half-time of their friendly with Rayo Vallecano.

This is despite the club stating they have ‘no problem’ with their talisman doing so.

Ronaldo’s reputation at Old Trafford is at risk

Ronaldo – who intends to leave Man United – had made his first pre-season appearance on Sunday afternoon after missing training and the Red Devils’ summer tour due to family issues.

But, after having a 45 minute run out, United’s talisman was then substituted for young forward Amad Diallo.

And he didn’t stick around to watch his team for the second half.

Instead, images on Twitter showed Ronaldo leaving the ground at half-time as his side were drawing 0-0, causing a frenzy within the Red Devils’ fan base online.

And ex-Liverpool star and Danny Murphy was less than impressed by the move.

When asked on what he made of Ronaldo’s early bow on Monday’s White and Jordan show, he said: “Well it doesn’t look good.

“I don’t think whatever your grievances are or however big a name you are you should do that. I think it gives a horrible message and it has to be dealt with.”

Manchester United – who originally declined to comment – have since clarified that they have no problem with Ronaldo heading off because he was one of a number of players to do so, according to Sky Sports.

However, Murphy believes that, either way, the star shouldn’t be risking causing controversy and risk creating bad precedents for others in the dressing room.

“You can’t have a player doing that, it sets a horrendous example,” he said.

talkSPORT’s Breakfast co-host Jamie O’Hara echoed Murphy’s opinion.

“He’s one of the greatest players ever but he’s still got to be a part of a squad and a part of a team,” the former Tottenham Hotspur man said.

“If he’s been dragged at half-time and left, that’s not good. You can’t do that as a player.”
