Newcastle have been given fresh hope in their transfer pursuit of Chelsea star Timo Werner.
But, it may not be as plain sailing as the Geordies would have hoped, with two European giants also now in the mix to sign the German.
Since the Magpies’ big money takeover last season, Eddie Howe’s side have been linked with a large list of players in their bid to rebuild the club.
However, target Werner’s wages could be a stumbling for Newcastle, with the star earning £272,000 a week – too much for the north east outfit’s wage structure.
Now, though, the Magpies have been given a life line by the Blues.
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle are yet to open direct talks with the German international.
But, most importantly, he’s revealed that Chelsea are prepared to let Werner leave on loan instead, and a deal could also include an option to buy.
However, Romano also stated that the forward is on both Juventus and his former club RB Leipzig’s wish lists this summer, too,

This means the Geordies will need to fight off the competition to secure his signature – although neither outfit are close to completing anything yet.
There had been speculation around Werner’s future following his inconsistent game time at Stamford Bridge last season, and he confirmed his displeasure over pre-season.
“First of all, the most important thing is that I am happy. I am happy when I play and score goals,” Werner said whilst away with his team in America.
“That’s the fact. That’s what I should take care of and the other things will come. I could be happy everywhere.
“I think of course the manager always has different ideas, different thoughts and what you need in different games, I think in many games I was not in his thoughts so I try to change that.
“It is clear I want to play more and I should play more to first be in good shape for the World Cup and also, to have a chance to play at the World Cup.”
If Newcastle do manage to fend off the competition from the European big boys, Werner will join new signings Sven Botman, Matt Targett, and Nick Pope at St James’ Park.
