talkSPORT host Simon Jordan has teased Gary Neville over his criticism of Todd Boehly after the Chelsea owner hijacked Manchester United’s bid for Frenkie de Jong.
United agreed a £72million fee with Barcelona earlier this summer, but De Jong stalled over the club’s lack of Champions League football and £17m worth of deferred wages still owed to him by the LaLiga side.
The Blues are now close to agreeing a smaller fee with Barca for the 25-year-old Dutch midfelder despite a three-month pursuit by the Red Devils.
There were suggestions new Chelsea chief Boehly was struggling in the market after the Blues missed out on the likes of Jules Kounde and Raphinha.
The American billionaire has all-but become the club’s director of football after Marina Granovskaia, Bruce Buck and Petr Cech left Stamford Bridge.
And last month, United legend Neville criticised Boehly’s gung-ho approach.
“He’s wandering around a little bit and they’re a bit panicky now. They’re almost like bouncing around because it feels like he has to do something.
Rashford wanted by PSG, Rabiot to Man United in danger, Chelsea swoop for De Jong
“You’re wondering, ‘Oh they’re coming in for [Frenkie] De Jong this morning’, because he feels like he has to do something, that pressure is on him.
“He wouldn’t have had that pressure if he’d have kept the people that have been there before and just let them operate for a year or two.
“I’m hearing his name too much.”
And ex-Crystal Palace owner Jordan believes it is ironic that Boehly’s supposed over-enthusiasm will help Chelsea get one over on Neville’s beloved United.
Jordan told talkSPORT: “I thought, a week ago, Boehly was being too busy, according to certain Man United-linked factions.
“Boehly rocks in and takes this player from under the nose of Man United, then maybe he will be too busy for different reasons!”
And Jordan insists it will be embarrassing for United if they do end up missing out on De Jong to Chelsea.
He added: “You will be disappointed because Boehly doesn’t know any of the people in these rooms. People at Man United do.
“The argument Graeme Souness advanced on Monday was, ‘Why did you kick Marina Granovskaia, Bruce Buck and Petr Cech out the door? Boehly doesn’t know the people at Barcelona and Real Madrid, he won’t be able to do business with them’.
“Man United are in a position where they have got relationships with the people at these clubs. They should be able to find a solution, but Chelsea are at the table.
“Of course it will be an embarrassment! It will be 12 weeks of a circular discussion that seemed to go nowhere – and they’ve been pipped to the post by a Chelsea side, which isn’t in the greatest nick.
“If we have seen a consistent sense of Man United cornerstoning their transfer policy on getting this boy in, then they will look rather foolish.”
