Man United need Eriksen to inspire at Brentford to avoid record from 1936

Erik ten Hag’s reign at Manchester United has only just begun but defeat in only his second game in charge will see him set an unwanted record that stretches back almost 86 years!

The Dutchman’s Old Trafford tenure got off to a nightmare start as his side lost 2-1 to Brighton to compound the misery around the club.

New signing Eriksen struggled to make an impact upfront

United ended last season on a six-match away losing run, their worst away run of defeats in the English top-flight since March 1981.

The Red Devils suffered a humbling 4-1 hammering in the Manchester derby against City back at the start of March.

Two consecutive trips to Merseyside followed in which United lost 1-0 to Everton before they shipped another four to Liverpool.

United also lost 3-1 to Arsenal before finishing the season with successive defeats – to Brighton and Crystal Palace respectively.

Rolling into the new season, Ten Hag’s side could make it seven consecutive away league losses with their visit to Brentford.

United haven’t suffered such a losing run since they fell to 10 straight defeats between September and December in 1936.

However, Ten Hag may have a secret weapon in Christian Eriksen.

The Dane was forced to operate out of position against Brighton in the absence of both Anthony Martial and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Once the latter emerged from the bench in the second-half, Eriksen was restored to his favoured midfield role and impressed.

He created the most chances (3) and had the joint-most shots (3) for United in their opening day defeat to the Seagulls.

Eriksen has created 33 chances since his return to the Premier League in February, with only Kevin De Bruyne (45) and Martin Odegaard (38) ahead.

And the 30-year-old will have added motivation to impress against his former club Brentford.

During his time under Thomas Frank, Eriksen made 11 appearances, scoring one goal and creating four more to help the club to avoid relegation.
