Man United ‘hold talks with Atletico Madrid over £30million move for Chelsea flop’

Manchester United have reportedly held talks with Atletico Madrid over a £30million move for ex-Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata.

The Red Devils are on the hunt for a frontman amid uncertainty over the future of Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcus Rashford’s links with Paris Saint-Germain and an injury to Anthony Martial.

All three are expected to stay at Old Trafford but manager Erik ten Hag was forced to use Christian Eriksen as a false-nine during the 2-1 defeat at home to Brighton on the opening day and fans are getting increasingly restless.

United saw a £6.75million bid for ex-Stoke and West Ham striker Marko Arnautovic rejected by Bologna and ended their interest after a backlash from supporters.

Now, the club could turn to former Chelsea striker Morata, according to The Athletic.

The Spain international, 29, spent the last two seasons on-loan at Juventus after returning to Atletico Madrid from Chelsea in 2020.

With one year remaining on Morata’s contract at the Metropolitano Stadium, it is understood Atleti are keen to sell.

Despite a bright start at Chelsea, Morata endured a nightmare spell at Stamford Bridge and his struggles in the Premier League will not fill fans with optimism.

However, Aston Villa legend Gabby Agbonlahor insists the Old Trafford faithful must adapt to a less exciting era.

Agbonlahor told talkSPORT Breakfast: “I don’t know who Man United fans think they are. Arnautovic makes that squad a better squad.

“They’ve got to stop living in the Fergie years. Man United, now, are a club who can’t attract top players.

“I’d rather Arnautovic in my team than Jadon Sancho at the moment.

“If he makes that team better for a season, get him in. It’s the manager’s choice, it doesn’t matter what the fans think.

“After he scores two goals, they’ll change their mind. They’re not shopping in Harrods anymore, they’re in a different place.

“These better players they’re interested in, they probably don’t want to go there. Why would you go to a club in a Europa League and join a group of players who are so average and mediocre?

“Who else wants to come to Man United? They can’t get De Jong, they’re looking at Rabiot who is not the same player he used to be, it’s like they’re panicking.

“This is their reality now, they can’t go out and get the top players they want. De Jong would rather stay at Barcelona or go to Chelsea than go to Manchester United.

“Arsenal got Gabriel Jesus done early, Man City got Erling Haaland, Liverpool got Darwin Nunez – who is out there who will come to Manchester United as that marquee signing? They don’t want to come!

“This is a different Manchester United now – this is what their fans have to understand. They’re not shopping for elite players anymore and they’re not going to attract the top players.

“If players want Champions League football, or see a project like Arsenal under Mikel Arteta, they’re going to choose the top five teams at the moment before Manchester United.”
