Returning to Anfield has been described as ‘going back to a church or a mosque’ as Liverpool legends prepare to take on Barcelona legends in a charity game.
A number of well-known faces are set to line up against Barca, including Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Dirk Kuyt, who will be managed by Sir Kenny Dalglish.
The match will be played in front of a sell-out Anfield crowd, raising funds for LFC Foundation and its charity partners.
Barcelona’s side will similarly feature a number of footballing legends such as Rivaldo, Edgar Davids, Gaizka Mendieta and Javier Saviola.
But Liverpool have granted extra insight into their squad ahead of the fixture, with a number of stars clearly overawed by the prospect of returning to Anfield, and talked through their feelings at the club’s AXA training centre.
Former Senegal midfielder Salif Daio was as excited as anyone, describing Anfield in effusive terms.
“Getting to Anfield is like going back to a church or a mosque,” he explained. “It’s your garden; you even miss the smell of the grass.
“It’s funny, every time we get to Anfield I always get a piece of grass and start smelling it – because you miss the smell of the grass. It’s really fantastic.”
Is Gareth Bale ‘the greatest British footballer of all-time’? talkSPORT pundits react
“The fans, really, as we say: You’ll Never Walk Alone. Still now we get letters from fans, from all around the world and everywhere we’ve been we still see Liverpool fans.
“It’s a really great feeling and an honour and a massive pleasure to be part of this family.”
Former Liverpool left back Fabio Aurelio was similarly delighted, describing his return as a ‘dream come true’.
“It’s really amazing to have the opportunity to step in Anfield again,” he said.
“Once you are a retired footballer you never expect to do that again, especially at such a club as Liverpool.
“To have the opportunity to contribute to such a great cause, the LFC Foundation, and having that dream also coming true: stepping in Anfield again.”
A number of Liverpool’s famous 2005 Champions League winning squad are also set to play, including the likes of Jerzey Dudek, Sami Hyypia and Luis Garcia.
One man who started in that historic win over AC Milan was Milan Baros who was similarly delighted to be back in Liverpool after such a long time away.
“I’m excited, looking forward to the game because it’s nearly 15 or 16 years I haven’t been at Anfield,” Baros said. “So, I’m excited. It was always something special.
“Especially in Anfield, the atmosphere is amazing there and the people are great.
“I’m really looking forward to be playing again in front of the Liverpool fans in the red shirt. It’s perfect for me.”
Meanwhile, Aston Villa manager and Liverpool legend Gerrard was delighted to hear that his old ground will be at full capacity for the game.
“Great to be back preparing for tomorrow’s game,” he said. “I’ve heard it’s a full house so well done to everyone who’s coming to support us for all the good causes.”
