It’s safe to say that football has experienced some pretty significant changes over the last 30 years.

As well as things like the backpass rule and VAR being introduced, the relationships managers have with their players is also different.

Conte works his players extremely hard and expects no nonsense

And the perfect example of that is Tottenham, who spent time in South Korea for pre-season with current boss Antonio Conte.

In a bid to get fit for the new campaign, Spurs players were put through some brutal training regimes, which have been posted on social media, leaving players hands-on-knees at the side of the pitch.

Conte and fitness coach Gian Piero Ventura were making players undertake 42 full pitch runs after a two-hour training session in 30-degree heat.

That is a slightly different approach to the one taken by ex-Tottenham gaffer Ossie Ardiles who, according to Jurgen Klinsmann, would give them money to go to the pub with!

“It was different in so many ways,” the striker, who joined the club 28 years ago, said about his move to Tottenham from Monaco in 1994.

Klinsmann had previously spent time at Inter, too, as he added: “In Italy, after training, you might have a club meal with some wine; here it was a beer or two in the players’ lounge after the match.

“Although I never saw in Italy what happened when we played a friendly in Dublin.

“Ossie came in the dressing room after the game and handed us £20 or £30 each. He just said: ‘Have a good time.’

“So we all went to the pub. That was wonderful, the simplicity of getting together, getting us working as hard as we could and enjoying the company of everyone.”

Klinsmann only spent one season at White Hart Lane, but what an impact he had.

Spurs fans took to the player straight away, mobbing him at a pre-season friendly against Watford – attended by more than 14,000 fans – with Klinsmann admitting he was moved by his reception at Vicarage Road.

A household name for his exploits with Germany at the 1990 World Cup, he had a reputation for diving.

So his first question to the media when unveiled was: “To begin with, I have a question for you…Is there a diving school in London?”

His celebration was equally memorable in Spurs’ opening day cracker at Sheffield Wednesday.

Nailing a header, he then dived only this time it was for joy.

Klinsmann was relentless throughout the season, scoring 30 times in all competitions.

But when it comes to both Conte’s intense workout and Klinsmann’s pub visits, too much of either may leave you unable to stand…
