Keane dismisses Martial’s credentials to replace Ronaldo and says what Man United need

Manchester United legend Roy Keane believes Anthony Martial cannot be Cristiano Ronaldo’s long-term replacement at Old Trafford.

The French forward was expected to leave the club this summer but a fine pre-season has raised hopes of a rennaisance.

With Ronaldo’s future uncertain, Martial looked like being a key figure for the Red Devils early on.

However, an injury saw him miss their opening fixture with Brighton, which isn’t ideal with his Portuguese teammate only considered fit enough for the bench.

But Keane also believes that Martial is not the man to come in for some one of the level of Ronaldo, who is one of the finest players to grace the game.

And he reckons a new forward should be signed by new manager Erik ten Hag before the transfer window closes to solve the predicament.

He told Sky Sports: “You can’t think Martial is the answer – he isn’t. He’s had a decent pre-season – big deal.

“They haven’t got enough options [up front], which might change over the next few weeks.

“But from a football point of view, you have to hold on to Ronaldo. You can’t just let him go without the back-up behind it.”

Fellow United legend Wayne Rooney, meanwhile, reckons Ronaldo should be sold soon to fund a new forward for the club.

He told The Times: “It will be really interesting to see how Manchester United go this year. Under Erik ten Hag, I think they’ll improve and the target has to be getting back into the top four.

“However, while Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal have strengthened and Chelsea are still bringing players in, United remain one or two signings away from having the squad to do it and so a lot depends on the last few weeks of the transfer window. United are doing everything to bring Frenkie de Jong in and they could certainly do with a midfielder. A No 9 too.

Keane has had his say on the matter

Keane has had his say on the matter

“I think United should let Cristiano Ronaldo go. It’s not that Ronaldo can’t play in a Ten Hag team. He can play in any team. Ronny will always score you goals. But my personal view is that United aren’t ready to challenge for the title now, so the aim has to be to build a team that can win the league in the next three to four years, and you have to plan for that.

“If the reports are true that Cristiano wants to leave the club, then United should allow him to go and get a No 9 in who is going to be there for the next three or four years and really help them build a team that can be successful. Ten Hag has to be given time to do it.”
