Kane must copy Ronaldo and Messi to stop Chelsea rot as he eyes Henry’s record

Tottenham will have to overcome their bogey team Chelsea if they are to establish themselves as true title challengers this season.

Spurs have been tipped to rival Manchester City and Liverpool this term following their stunning opening day victory over Southampton.

Harry Kane has thrived at Spurs since Conte’s appointment

Antonio Conte’s side put Saints to the swordas they picked up where they left off last seasonby qualifying for the Champions League.

It’s the beginning of Conte’s first full campaign in charge of Spurs but a trip to his former stomping ground provides his side with an early test.

Tottenham have won just one of their last 37 away matches against Chelsea in all competitions – which came when Conte was in the opposite dugout!

During their miserable run, the Lilywhites lost a whopping 24 games, including their most recent visit – a 2-0 defeat back in January.

If Conte is to reverse their fortunes at Stamford Bridge then he’ll need talisman Harry Kane to end his Chelsea hoodoo.

The England captain appeared from the bench during Tottenham’s famous 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge in April 2018 but didn’t score.

And it marks a worrying trend for Kane, who has failed to score in any of his last five games against Chelsea – his third longest goalless run against a team in the Premier League.

The other two sides were both from Manchester which makes his Chelsea struggles all the more surprising considering his London derby record.

Kane’s 41 Premier League goals in derby games in the English capital leaves him just two shy of Arsenal icon Thierry Henry’s all-time feat.

Kane’s task now will be to emulate two of the all-time greats in Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, who have both come up short against Chelsea as well.

Ronaldo notched in a 1-1 draw with the Blues in April, having failed to find the net in 12 previous attempts stretching back to his header in the 2008 Champions League final.

Messi, meanwhile, finally ended a nine-game, 729-minute drought against Chelsea during a European showdown in 2018.

Again, Conte was the man in charge – this Sunday both him and Kane have the chance to put down a marker and exercise their Chelsea demons.
