Hernandez offers services to Man United for free and wades in on Red Devils’ issues

Ex-Manchester United star Javier Hernandez insists he would play for free at Old Trafford if the Red Devils wanted him.

The 34-year-old, who now plays for LA Galaxy, scored 37 Premier League goals over a five-year spell with United.

Erik ten Hag is looking for a new striker amid uncertainty over the future of Cristiano Ronaldo and an injury to Anthony Martial.

The Red Devils recently saw a £6.75million bid rejected by Bologna for ex-Stoke and West Ham striker Marko Arnautovic – and subsequently ended their interest.

Chicharito is only one-year older than the Austrian and with 28 goals in 54 MLS games, the Mexican is ready to answer the call if United want him.

Hernandez said: “Man, I mean, there are these situations and I know the narratives because of my age and my past.

“If United came for me then I’d say ‘yes, I’ll play for free.’ Of course, you know, I’d do that.

“But I also want to be very respectful to my club. I am playing very consistently and in my mind and my world, my conviction is all about winning a championship with LA Galaxy.”

Doom and gloom already surrounds Old Trafford amid an underwhelming summer transfer window and a2-1 defeat to Brightonon the opening day of the Premier League season.

When asked about the problems at United, Hernandez suggested his old manager Sir Alex Ferguson still casts a shadow over the club despite his retirement in 2013.

Hernandez said: “It doesn’t surprise me because in life it’s not easy having a manager for 26 years in the way that Sir Alex did it.

“To substitute that man like that is not easy.

“It is like winning the lottery. Do you think anyone you hire afterwards is going to be able to do 80 per cent of what Ferguson did?

“My point of view is that after Ferguson brings so much pressure that it just isn’t going to work out.

“United need to now get over the fact that Sir Alex Ferguson has gone.

“Would we like to have someone similar? Yes, yes, yes. But Sir Alex has gone and it is never going to be the same.

“So United have to adapt and allow the next manager to do it in his own way.”
