Garth Crooks picks Newcastle United star in Premier League team of the week

Garth Crooks has picked his best 11 performers from the weekend’s action.

The Premier League team of the weekend that has most impressed him.

Included in his top 11 is one player from the game at St James Park.

I think there were a few contenders on Saturday afternoon for a Premier League team of the week but no complaints with the identity of this Garth Crooks choice…

Crooks declaring: ‘This footballer can defend and play in equal measure….’

The BBC Sport man selecting Fabian Schar after a magnificent performance.

Garth Crooks pointing out how Schar did he job at the back, mentioning in particular an excellent first half tackle on Jesse Lingard.

Then in the 58th minute…’Schar’s strike for Newcastle’s opening goal was struck beautifully.’ A superb long range strike and almost a carbon copy of a previous stunning goal the Switzerland international scored against Burnley.

As I say no complaints about Garth Crooks selecting the Newcastle defender but I think for anybody inside St James’ Park on Saturday, it would have been very difficult to select anybody ahead of Bruno G when it came to man of the match.

Interesting to read Crooks taking the opportunity also to have a real go at Jesse Lingard: ‘I’m not sure who looks more ridiculous. Lingard for signing or Forest for accepting the terms.’

After leaving Man Utd, Lingard widely reported to be demanding crazy money, eventually signing for Forest on a one year deal.

No disrespect to Forest, but both West Ham and Newcastle had been interested in signing the former Man Utd midfielder, yet clearly it ended up just being about money for Jesse Lingard. After watching him on Saturday, I don’t think many (any?) Newcastle fans will be bothered in the slightest that we ‘missed out’ on him.

As for Fabian Schar, with Eddie Howe retaining his excellent last season partnership with Dan Burn, we are now left wondering just how it will play out, as Sven Botman waits in the wings for his chance.

Garth Crooks explains why he picked Fabian Schar in his Premier League team of the week and then the full eleven are listed below:

Fabian Schar (Newcastle)

“His first-half tackle on Jesse Lingard in the Newcastle box was enough to suggest the Swiss defender was in no mood to give the Nottingham Forest player one inch.

“Schar’s strike for Newcastle’s opening goal was struck beautifully.

“This footballer can defend and play in equal measure.

“Precisely what Lingard is doing at Forest I am not entirely sure, but a one-year deal on a free transfer?

“What sort of commitment is that? Does Lingard think we are all stupid?

“Take the deal and split if the team goes down – is that the plan?

“I’m not sure who looks more ridiculous. Lingard for signing or Forest for accepting the terms.”
