When it comes to Cristiano Ronaldo and goals, there are not many who can brag about scoring more than him.

But Diogo Jota may have the opportunity to do so after his strike in the FA Cup took him ahead of his international teammate in a specific goalscoring chart.

The forward, who scored Liverpool’s winning goal in the 1-0 FA Cup quarter-final win over Nottingham Forest, overtook Ronaldo as the top Portuguese goalscorer in big-five European leagues this season.

Jota now has 19 in all competitions, having scored 13 in the Premier League, three in the EFL Cup, two in the FA Cup, and one in the Champions League.

The former Wolves man has continued to find the back of the net for Jurgen Klopp’s side this season, having netted 13 for them in the previous campaign.

Ronaldo will be keen to overtake Jota again but, with Manchester United out of both domestic cups and the Champions League, this may be a record that is out of his reach.

Of the 18 that the United man has scored this season, 12 of them have come in the league, with six coming in the Champions League – a competition he has always been prolific in.

That means Jota is currently one ahead of his international teammate heading into the final stages of the season.

And, with the two meeting up over the international break as Portugal face Turkey in a crucial World Cup qualifier, Jota may be tempted to tease his teammate about the accomplishment.

However, the 25-year-old still has a long way to go to match the astonishing 825 goals Ronaldo has scored across his career, as well as the 133 he’s scored for his country.
