Antonio Conte has given Tottenham fans hope the popular Italian coach will stick around for many years to come.

The 52-year-old is a proven winner and has already made huge progress at Spurs during his eight months in charge, but has a reputation for moving on quickly when things aren’t going his way.

It’s a good thing for Tottenham, then, that the club seems to still be on a high after beating north London rivals Arsenal aside to a place in the Premier League top four last season.

It’s fair to say the fiery Italian isn’t best known for having an upbeat character, but for his brutally honest pre and post-match assessments and touch line theatrics.

However, Conte appears to be in high spirits ahead of next season, and when speaking ahead of his side’s pre-season friendly against AS Roma in Israel, the Spurs boss was optimistic about their chances.

And he hinted he could be in for the long haul at the north London club – which will be music to the ears of Tottenham supporters excited for the season ahead after a number of impressive signings.

Speaking in Tel Aviv on Friday, Conte said: “As I’ve said before, our project, our plan is to try to become competitive, more than the past.

“But you know very well that in football you build something important in one day, one month, one year you have go step by step and try to increase the quality, increase the number of players in your squad.

“Don’t forget that when a team stays in the top four and play European games you need to face four competitions in the best possible way.”

There were fears within the Spurs fanbase that chairman Daniel Levy’s history of being unwilling to spend in transfer windows would drive Conte away.

But so far, Spurs have recruited Richarlison for £60million, Yves Bissouma for £25m and Djed Spence for £20m, as well as bringing in Ivan Perisic and Fraser Forster for free and Clement Lenglet on loan.

And Conte’s comments on Friday will reassure fans that he’s likely to be there to see his project through and not abandon ship.

“To do this [to be in the top four] you need a good squad with good quality, we are trying to do this but we have just started this process,” he explained.

“Last season I think we worked very well to reach a place in the Champions League.

“At the same time I think we exploited problems, [Manchester] United‘s problems and in the last three games Arsenal were four points up on us and for this reason we have to continue with the club to build with the players, to continue to improve them.

“They have a lot of space for improvement. This is a young team and we can work for many years together to improve and fight with the best teams in England and in Europe.”
