Graeme Souness has said a £40million move for Evertonâs âpromisingâ youngster Anthony Gordon is a âgambleâ for a Chelsea side needing goals.
Gordon, 21, is the subject of a whopping bid from the Blues, having only properly broken into the Toffeesâ first team last season.
The local lad and academy star made his senior debut in 2017 and made 12 appearances the following season before spending 2020/21 on loan at Preston.
Last season, though, he became a fixture under Rafael Benitez and Frank Lampard, scoring four goals in 40 appearances in all competitions, and getting called up to Englandâs Under-21s in November.
Gordon has started both of Evertonâs opening Premier League games as a striker this season, convincing Chelsea to make a bid, which may soon be increased.
talkSPORT sources understand Lampard is keen on Chelseaâs Michy Batshuayi and Billy Gilmour, who could move as part of a deal.
Graeme Souness is far from convinced though.
âItâs a hell of a lot of money for a 21-year-old whoâs played 50-odd games,â the Scot told talkSPORT.
Man United’s Ronaldo stance unchanged, Vardy linked, Chelsea make Gordon bid
âI think the young man is promising but when youâre spending £40m on someone who might not be a player itâs a big gamble.
âI think Chelseaâs needs are in another area, I think they need to get an out-and-out goalscorer through the middle, someone whoâs going to put them away for fun.
âI canât see the sense of it for Chelsea, I donât think heâs going to come in and be an impact for where they want to be, itâs a gamble.
âI think where Chelsea are now, I look at their bench I look at their starting eleven, theyâre in good shape, but for one area, a major goalscorer.â
Not only was Chelseaâs part in the deal questioned, but also Evertonâs with Simon Jordan saying selling up could backfire massively.
He explained: âI think it would be awfully bad business for Everton to sell Anthony Gordon.
âThis is a young player coming out of their academy, itâs a ridiculous amount of money, Everton have got guidelines around Financial Fair Play and theyâre restricted by what they can and canât do.
âThis sends a message – theyâd have sold Richarlison, havenât really replaced him, and I think selling one of your young players – the thing that keeps you sane – producing a player from your academy that wants to play for you, sends all the wrong kind of messaging.
âFor the player, thereâs no guarantee heâs going to get in Chelseaâs side so whatâs he doing? Heâs playing at Everton, heâs learning his trade, earning the right to be a top player and playing week-in week-out, at Chelsea itâs going to be an entirely different dynamic.â
