Chelsea’s £40m move for Gordon is a ‘gamble’ says Souness, and Everton warned too

Graeme Souness has said a £40million move for Everton’s ‘promising’ youngster Anthony Gordon is a ‘gamble’ for a Chelsea side needing goals.

Gordon, 21, is the subject of a whopping bid from the Blues, having only properly broken into the Toffees’ first team last season.

The local lad and academy star made his senior debut in 2017 and made 12 appearances the following season before spending 2020/21 on loan at Preston.

Last season, though, he became a fixture under Rafael Benitez and Frank Lampard, scoring four goals in 40 appearances in all competitions, and getting called up to England’s Under-21s in November.

Gordon has started both of Everton’s opening Premier League games as a striker this season, convincing Chelsea to make a bid, which may soon be increased.

talkSPORT sources understand Lampard is keen on Chelsea’s Michy Batshuayi and Billy Gilmour, who could move as part of a deal.

Graeme Souness is far from convinced though.

“It’s a hell of a lot of money for a 21-year-old who’s played 50-odd games,” the Scot told talkSPORT.

“I think the young man is promising but when you’re spending £40m on someone who might not be a player it’s a big gamble.

“I think Chelsea’s needs are in another area, I think they need to get an out-and-out goalscorer through the middle, someone who’s going to put them away for fun.

“I can’t see the sense of it for Chelsea, I don’t think he’s going to come in and be an impact for where they want to be, it’s a gamble.

“I think where Chelsea are now, I look at their bench I look at their starting eleven, they’re in good shape, but for one area, a major goalscorer.”

Not only was Chelsea’s part in the deal questioned, but also Everton’s with Simon Jordan saying selling up could backfire massively.

He explained: “I think it would be awfully bad business for Everton to sell Anthony Gordon.

“This is a young player coming out of their academy, it’s a ridiculous amount of money, Everton have got guidelines around Financial Fair Play and they’re restricted by what they can and can’t do.

“This sends a message – they’d have sold Richarlison, haven’t really replaced him, and I think selling one of your young players – the thing that keeps you sane – producing a player from your academy that wants to play for you, sends all the wrong kind of messaging.

“For the player, there’s no guarantee he’s going to get in Chelsea’s side so what’s he doing? He’s playing at Everton, he’s learning his trade, earning the right to be a top player and playing week-in week-out, at Chelsea it’s going to be an entirely different dynamic.”
