Darren Bent insists he’d rather have Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard – and former Tottenham midfielder Rafael van der Vaart – over Manchester United man Bruno Fernandes.

The Portuguese midfielder is reportedly set to sign a new five-year deal with the club, after impressing since arriving at Old Trafford in 2020.

But when asked about whether he’d take the attacking midfielder at his beloved Arsenal by co-host Andy Goldstein – Bent insisted he wouldn’t, preferring their current No.10, Odegaard.

The former Premier League striker said: “Of course, he’s been a very good player for Manchester United, but I’m still waiting for him to turn up when they really need him in those big games.”

Goldstein then told Bent: “But there’s no doubt that Bruno Fernandes is an excellent player and there’s no doubt that him signing a five-year deal at Man United is fantastic news.

“You’d have him in a heartbeat Arsenal.”

Bent replied: “No, I wouldn’t – I’ll tell you that right now. No, I would not.

“Right now, I’d rather have Martin Odegaard with the way Arsenal are playing.”

He added: “I’m taking Odegaard in that role for Arsenal. He’s perfect for what Arsenal are doing right now. I wouldn’t swap him for Bruno.”

Goldstein went on to speak about his happiness at Fernandes potentially signing a new deal, praising the way he hit the ground running when he joined the Red Devils in 2020.

Challenged to find someone who has made as much of an instant impact as the Portuguese midfielder did, Bent nominated ex-Tottenham man Rafael van der Vaart – but his co-presenter emphatically disagreed.

“Van der Vaart at Spurs – he was better than Bruno”, Bent claimed.

Van der Vaart was superb during his time at White Hart Lane – but better than Fernandes?

“Oh, shut up! He was not better than Bruno Fernandes,” Goldstein replied. “What are you talking about?

“He was a great player but he was nowhere Bruno. The impact he had, the goals and assists in his first season…”

“I’m going Van de Vaart”, said Bent, sticking to his guns. “I’m saying he was better.”

His co-host was clearly getting on his nerves, so Goldstein resorted to a childlike comeback.

Goldstein said: “I’ll Van der Vaart you, whatever that means…”

Never change, lads.
