It’s been a whirlwind few weeks for Marc Bircham who finds himself with ambitous Italian Serie B side Como and coaching Cesc Fabregas.

Bircham was recently appointed to head coach Giacomo Gattuso’s team with former Arsenal and Chelsea star Fabregas joining the Italian minnows shortly afterwards.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Bircham explained that a familiar face helped him land the role and outlined the club’s ambitious plans.

“Me and Dennis [Wise] have been close for many years. He’s been CEO over here for about three years but he’s kept it under the radar,” said Bircham.

“They’ve done really well. They’ve been promoted to Serie C to Serie B and now they’re looking to kick on to Serie A in the next three years so it’s a really good project.

“It’s a very good standard, there’s big budgets in the league. It’s the best Serie B they’ve had. They’ve got Genoa and Cagliari, Parma are in the league too, there’s a lot of big teams and a lot of ex-Serie A teams too.

“He [Wise] did have to talk me into it but it’s Lake Como so only working holiday hotspots,” Bircham joked.

Como brought in Wise as a consultant in 2019 before appointing him CEO in 2021, in hope of getting the club back to Serie A for the first time since 2002.

Most recently, Bircham took charge of League of Ireland side Waterford following spells coaching at QPR and Chicago fire in the MLS.

But now he is coaching World Cup winner Cesc Fabregas and insists the 35-year-old Spaniard still has plenty to offer on the pitch.

Bircham said: “He’s over here, he’s looking to play as long as he can. As the saying goes you’re a long time retired. He can still offer a lot to the team and on the pitch and on the commercial side of things, Cesc coming in has really helped.”

As a coach Bircham understands the importance of communication and is slowly grasping the Italian language – but doesn’t expect to fully master it for a while.

“It’s great for me to come over and learn the language. I’m trying,” he laughed. “Hopefully in six months i’ll be talking Italian but they said it would be more like Ray Winstone talking Italian.”
