Bellingham can be ‘Liverpool’s Haaland’ with Klopp’s side ‘light in midfield’

Jude Bellingham could be Liverpool’s Erling Haaland if he signs next summer, but the Reds could pay for not recruiting a midfielder this year.

Bellingham, 19, is widely regarded as one of the best young talents in football after breaking through with Borussia Dortmund and England.

He looks destined to spend a third season in the Bundesliga which could complicate matters for Liverpool, who have been strongly linked with the former Birmingham City star, and now have injury problems in midfield.

Thiago Alcantara is expected to be out of action for four to six weeks after picking up an opening day injury in a 2-2 draw with Fulham, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita both missed the fixture.

Manager Jurgen Klopp has since said there won’t be any more incomings before the window closes as ‘it only makes sense if it’s the right player’ and some believe that will be Bellingham next year.

Manchester City had a similar wait for Haaland, but it’s looking like it was worth it, with the Norwegian in scary form with a double against West Ham on his Premier League debut.

But not acting now could prove costly according to talkSPORT hosts Ray Parlour and Trevor Sinclair, despite Klopp being able to rely on other options.

“I do feel they’re a little bit light in midfield,” said Sinclair.

“They’re talking about Jude Bellingham next summer and they probably won’t do anything because they’re probably going for him next summer.”

Parlour added: “If they can get Bellingham next year that will be like Haaland going to City, the wow factor because he’s going to be a top player.

“I know Thiago’s a very important player but they’ve still got options in midfield, [Harvey] Elliott, he could get a starting place, [Naby] Keita coming back, Fabinho’s going to be very important.

“[James] Milner is another option, he can come in and do a job for anybody, but it is a blow, Thiago.”

Klopp was asked about Liverpool’s midfield situation ahead of their clash with Crystal Palace and insisted that the transfer market again isn’t the right solution.

“I’m happy with the strength and quality of my squad,” he said. “But we have injuries, that’s how it is.

“The question is how long the players are out and there are different solutions. One is transfer market, but only makes sense if the right player.

“All the other solutions are inside the squad, we definitely have too many injuries that is clear. Naby will be back on Monday. Kostas [Tsimikas] will train today for first time, might be back.

“If we had the right solution then we would have done it already. We are not stubborn.

“If we look at the right player and there would have been opportunity, then we would do it and would have done it. We have had a lot of conversations but it doesn’t look like [it will happen].”

While Liverpool opened their season with a draw, Bellingham and Dortmund began theirs with a nervy win against Bayer Leverkusen who they finished ahead of in second place last season.

Bellingham played the 90 minutes, and earned huge praise from manager Edin Terzic, who he won the German cup under in 2021 with Haaland as his teammate.

“Jude came to us as a teenager and is now slowly becoming a young adult,” Terzic said.

“Of course a lot has happened in the last two years, physically his body has developed but also character-wise he is much stronger.

“He now has many, many games of senior football in his bones. He wants to have this type of responsibility [as third captain], he can handle it, so we were happy to give it to him.

“He’s been one of our most consistent players over the last couple of years. But still he has to be a bit more balanced in one or two areas to be able to control his emotions a little bit better.

“I said a year and a half ago and I stand by it, ‘We still don’t know how good he is yet.’ The only thing we are trying to find out is where his limit will be.”
