Frenkie de Jong’s potential move to Manchester United has been a rollercoaster ride to say the least.

Now, Barcelona‘s president Joan Laporta has given a fresh update on De Jong’s future and the star’s intentions – and it won’t be music to the ears of Man United fans or their new manager, Erik ten Hag.

This week saw former Man United right-back Gary Neville tell De Jong to consider legal action against Barcelona for ‘bullying’ him, with the club owing him £17million in unpaid wages.

It’s understood De Jong’s owed fees are serving as a stumbling block for his move to Manchester, which has caused controversy given they’ve been splashing the cash on stars such as Robert Lewandowski.

In response, Barcelona came out and explain how they were affording their new recruits.

Now, Barca chief Laporta has also come out to expand on De Jong’s situation, amidst his links with a move to Manchester United to reunite with his former Ajax boss, Ten Hag.

And it appears whatever hope the coach had of recruiting his fellow Dutchman are now over.

“Frenkie is Barca player,” Laporta said on Friday. “We want him to stay, he wants to stay.

“We’ve received important bids for him but he’s our player.

“You know salary budget situation; so we will do our best to keep Frenkie at Barca… and I hope he’ll do the same.”

Those quotes are contrary to the reports that Barcelona wanted to offload De Jong this summer to help finance their summer transfer spree.

It would appear the Catalan club will not have to do much convincing to get De Jong to stay, as it has been widely reported throughout United’s pursuit that his preference is to stay at the Nou Camp.

Ten Hag and his team are yet to completely pull out of their pursuit for the midfielder.

However, reports from Italy suggest Manchester United are preparing to offer £42million for Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic as a back up to De Jong.

But stalled talks, for now, perfectly sum up United’s summer transfer window, with Ajax winger Antony’s arrival also grinding to a halt.

United have two pre-season games remaining before the start of the new Premier League campaign next week and just over a month left to get bodies through the door.
