Barca accused of ‘bullying’ De Jong as Neville tells player to consider legal action

Frenkie de Jong has been told to consider legal action against Barcelona by Gary Neville, who’s accused the club of ‘bullying’ the player.

The Dutch midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United this summer, however, things are at a standstill with Barca understood to owe De Jong £17million in unpaid wages.

The De Jong transfer saga has been dragging on all summer and shows no sign of ending anytime soon

Financial struggles mean the LaLiga giants have been unable to pay De Jong and other players in full, the club claims.

However, they’ve spent big on bringing new players to the Camp Nou, with the acquisitions of Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski taking their summer spending to over £90million.

Meanwhile, they look set to pinch Sevilla defender Jules Kounde from Chelsea’s grasp in a £51m deal.

This has left former Man United star Neville incensed, who also called on worldwide players’ organisation FIFPRO to take action as well.

Neville tweeted: “De Jong should consider legal action v Barcelona and all players should be behind him!

“A club spending fortunes on new players whilst not paying the ones they have under contract their full money is immoral and a breach.

“@FIFPRO should be all over bullying like this and stop it.”

talkSPORT’s Alex Crook echoed Neville’s views, slamming Barcelona’s ‘classless’ treatment of De Jong.

Crook said: “I know the narrative has been that he doesn’t want to join United anyway, I don’t think that is the case.

“Surely John Murtough, Richard Arnold and Erik ten Hag wouldn’t have spent so many weeks, so much time, so much effort in trying to close out a deal for a player who had no interest in the move.

“It’s a game being played between De Jong, his advisors and Barcelona… they [De Jong and his advisors] want the money he’s owed and then he’ll feel more inclined to join Manchester United.

“Xavi has said he wants to use him as a centre-back, I think that’s disrespectful again to De Jong.

“I think Barcelona’s conduct has been classless and De Jong has a right to feel aggrieved at the way he’s being treated.”
