Jesus has been on fire for Arteta in pre-season

Despite missing out on Champions League football last season, Arsenal signed Jesus and Oleksandr Zinckenko from top-flight champions Manchester City.

Jesus scored seven times in five pre-season matches, including a hat-trick against Sevilla, raising hopes of a prolific debut season as the main man at the Emirates, after years of being in and out of the City team under Pep Guardiola.

Arteta worked with the Brazil striker at the Etihad during his time as assistant to Guardiola and his quality was no secret.

However, the Gunners boss did not expect Jesus to adapt so quickly.

“When you bring in top players who are coming from top clubs where they have been extremely successful over the years, they are going to expect that expectation,” Arteta said.

“The role Gabriel has here is going to be very different to the role he had at his previous club, that needs some adaptation and some time.

“He’s done it fantastically well, we are surprised how quickly he has done it, but we have to share that responsibility.

“He’s an enormous talent, a player with mentality that is so contagious, and he is going to give us a lot, but it is a team contribution at the end of the day.”

Arteta comes up against Gunners legend and Palace boss Patrick Vieira at Selhurst Park on Friday night.

And Vieira believes Arsenal now have a squad which can compete with the best teams in the Premier League.

He said: “[Arsenal] are in a better place than last year. The new players have made them much stronger. They have the squad to challenge to be closer to the title.

“It is really important [to play at home] and it was really successful last year as our home record was really good.

“Playing the first game at home is an advantage and I’m really looking forward to the game. The fans are excited, we are really excited and we want to start the season well to give the fans a really good performance.”
